Spring has kind of ‘sprung’ for us finally here in the mountains. The soil temperatures are warming and the cold nights are dissipating. There is a lot of sun and new growth and it’s time to consider your seeds and what you want to eat by the end of the year. Along with carefully introducing your seeds and seedlings to the warming outside it’s a good time to get your warm temperature seedlings germinating inside on a window sill or in a covered structure. There are likely still seeds to be sorted and organised for growing on, plants that are resprouting that need propagating by cuttings and It’s also a good time to inspect some of your over wintered dormant root systems for health. You can see in one of the photos this month a healthy root system for a nice cold hardy Japanese variety of Mioga Ginger that is ready to come back into growth. This upcoming meeting we will be focussed again on the practical aspects of seed saving including harvesting, filtering/sieving and cleaning seeds along with packing and storage – and labelling. And as usual we will spend some time talking about the current seasonal planting and harvesting and swapping/packing seeds and swapping seedlings and cuttings between members.
It’s that time again!
This is just a quick reminder that the meeting for August 2025 of the Mid Blue Mountains SeedSavers is on at the Bullaburra Progress Hall this coming weekend.
