Well finally we have some good growing weather here in the Blue Mountains. Things are warming up and we have sunlight! It may be a good growing season this summer. It’s time right now to look at all the possibilities and start planting. There are also many plants that have successfully seeded and are ripening up ready to start the growing cycle all over again. Shown here is the Australia Native ‘Yam Daisy’ or ‘Murnong’ – Microseris lanceolata. There are actually 3 species that are slightly different from one another and grow at different altitudes and have different root forms and tastes. They are starting to bulk up in size and flower right now and its the right time to start the seeds growing again so that the small tasty tubers can be harvested in Autumn. Because they can easily be misidentified as dandelions and related green rosette plants with Yellow flowers it is a good idea to keep them growing in an obvious place like a container. They grow well in containers. They germinate easily and grow fast and it’s a great Australian food plant to try growing yourself.

Help celebrate the Blue Mountains Spring!

It’s time to put seeds and seedlings in and plan for the abundance of summer.

Last meeting we covered the basics of the process of seed germination and how to get seeds started.

As part of our continuing seed saving discussions this meeting we will be focussed on talking about the process of ‘potting on’ or moving seedlings that have successfully germinated and are at the ‘true leaf’ stage in to new containers or the soil.

Come along and talk about growing things with like minded people.
