Seed Savers meeting 17 September 2023

The weather has changed again and we are now heading into a very sunny productive spring and summer. This upcoming seedsavers meeting we will be talking about planning your garden spaces and timing of edible plant crops along with storing your seeds. Planning your garden for the year ahead can be a lot of fun. But this is also probably one of the hardest aspects of seed saving to grasp. How long do seeds last in a storage container? and when should you plant them to make sure you have good quality ‘true’ fresh seed available?. Some seeds only last a year and so you need to plant all of your varieties out every year to replace them. But this means you have to pay more attention to how they get pollinated and in some cases try to isolate the plants from each other so they don’t get all pollinated together and cross and produce seeds for next year that just don’t produce the same thing. Keeping some varieties ‘true to type’ can some times be managed easily with netting or by just planting a single different variety each year – but some involve a lot of work and planning. Photos this time are of : A members garden with various growing plants including a very large blue grow bag loaded with varieties if Sliver Beets (Chard). Lettuce being protected from the marsupials, insects and birds under fine growing mesh fabric. The varieties are ‘Devils Ear’ and ‘Canaries Tongue’. And some Pumpkin seeds drying with their thin translucent membrane that flakes off as they reach their ideal dryness stage ready for planting.

It’s that time again!
This is just a quick reminder that the next scheduled meeting for the year 2023 of the Mid Blue Mountains SeedSavers is on at the Bullaburra Progress Hall this coming weekend.
