Seed Savers meeting 20 August 2023

Well the winter has been somewhat even more unpredictable in the Blue Mountains this year. While being the warmest July on record we also had some of the coldest snaps for a long time going down well below zero C at night. And we are forecast to be moving into another El Niño drought – so get your mulch and watering systems ready! This time of year marks the beginning and end of a wonderful turnover of plants – harvesting those that have been responding to the cold by changing colour or repsprouting. The chicories and kales are regrowing with the fantastic flavours and colours brought on by cold exposure, the root crops like asparagus are sending up their new shoots and it’s time to plant out your potatoes here in the Blue Mountains! Shown here are a rare true pink asparagus grown from seed back in 2011, the tasty radicchio ‘Red Grumolo’, and two uncommon varieties of Potato from the Solanum tuberosum groups Phureja and Andigena. These can be grown from ‘true seed’ and not just ‘cloned’ using seed potato tubers. This meeting we are going to be looking at seed saving techniques from the beginning starting point. What some of the basic things you need to know about seed saving – and what might be a good place to begin the journey. This is relevant to all – children and beginners to this whole world of growing – but also important for those that have been doing it for many years and there is always something to learn regardless of your experience level.

It’s that time again!
This is just a quick reminder that the next scheduled meeting for the year 2023 of the Mid Blue Mountains SeedSavers is on at the Bullaburra Progress Hall this coming weekend.

Sunday 20 August 2023 from 10 am till Midday
