Seed Savers meeting 7 December 2025

Well Summer is finally here for us in the Blue Mountains up high to the west of Sydney. It’s time to get all those seedings into the ground after the usual crazy weather during October and November. This weather pattern of wild swings from hot to cold and huge unexpected wind, hail and lightning storms is actually part of the normal expected annual weather pattern we get every year in the Blue Mountains. However we do now usually have a nice long stable growing season until around the end of May – so get those plants into ground! There will be plants right now starting to come back into strong growth that will surprise like the native peppermint shown in the photo that is growing along with some Warrigal greens (hardly visible currently) that is a welcome patch of tasty native herbage. Some plants will have produced seed during the late winter and spring that will have dried off and be ready to process like the fluffy ball of Salsify seeds sitting next to a few large stalks of purple sprouting broccoli shown here. These sorts of spring seeds can usually be germinated and grown on as summer warms up even more. And of course the plants that you grew from seed and carefully protected in various containers and structures while the crazy spring weather was pounding us with heatwaves and freezing overnight cold snaps can be finally put in the ground.

This upcoming meeting we will be focussed again on the practical aspects of seed saving including harvesting, filtering/sieving and cleaning seeds along with packing and storage – and labelling. And as usual we will spend some time talking about the current seasonal planting and harvesting and swapping/packing seeds and swapping seedlings and cuttings between members.

It’s that time again!
This is just a quick reminder that the meeting for December 2025 of the Mid Blue Mountains SeedSavers is on at the Bullaburra Progress Hall this coming weekend.
